The indispensable first step to getting things you want out of this life is this, decide what you want – Ben Stein
In order to live the life you desire, you need to really know what it is you want. Sounds simple, right? Ha, not quite. There are so many options available to us, so many things that would be nice to have that could make our life easier. So much we’d like to do, but they’re not the kind of want I’m talking about. I’m talking about the kind of want that once you know what it is, there’s no shaking it. It takes the breath from your lungs and squeezes at your heart. It sends ripples through your body and overflows your mind. It smothers you with an avalanche of emotions. Excitement, fear hope, and desperation. It’s the kind of want that’s not going to come easy, your body senses it, your mind knows it. That racing heart, that tight chest. That overflowing mind and you’re wide eyes are all working in your favour, it’s your body’s way of preparing you to fight for what you want. Are you ready?
What do you want? What do you really want, right now, with every cell of your being? What excites you? What terrifies you? What makes your eyes shine brightly? What, when you think of getting it, makes you clench your fists and do that crazy little giddy dance? Come on, I know you do it too.
Whatever it is, that’s the want you must focus everything you do towards getting. Everything else is just a kind of want and most often they will join you on your journey to your true want anyway.
Now that you know what you want, the second step is to know your why. Why do you want it? What is the reason behind it? What is your motivation? Your why is a drive that will push you into action.
Going after the life you want is not easy, far from it. Your why will pick you up when life has you on your back. It will push you forward and give you the jump-start you need when you think you have nothing left. It will find your way out of nowhere. It comes from deep within you and holds a power greater than you ever imagined. So what or who, are you doing this for?
The third step is knowing what you are going to do to get there. Let your mind run wild and write down every idea it throws at you. Keep going until you are empty. Now review your list. Out of all those ideas cross off those you know you will never do and those that are just crazy ramblings.
Now go through your list again. What are the things you could do right now? Write them onto a new list and cross them off the original as you do.
Now schedule these into your diary, keep to two tasks for each day, you can always do more if time allows but it’s better to be ahead of schedule than to overwhelm yourself.
Finally, I want you to go back to your original list. Out of what is left, what speaks to you the loudest? What do you really want to do? Now, whatever that idea is, I want you to break it down into the smallest possible steps. Done? Take another look, can it be broken down further? Each of these individual steps will now be set as your third daily task.
You now know what you want, you know your way and you know the steps you need to take to get it. Review your list every day, every week and when you completed everything on your list, do the third step again.
Keep taking action, keep growing, and go get what you want.
